[Winona Online Democracy]

I have copied below a press release that I sent out last week regarding the finale for the Winona Reads Community Book Project. I believe that this public discussion will be invaluable for our community regarding not only the Hmong refugees who live here, but all "newcomers" who bring a different cultural background to Winona. I encourage all--even if you haven't read the book (but I hope you do)-- to participate in this discussion.

Vicki Englich

For Immediate Release:

The Winona Reads Community Book Project will host the final public discussion about this year's selected book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, by Anne Fadiman, on Sunday, February 8 at 4:00 p.m. at the Winona Middle School cafeteria. There will be a panel discussion with representatives of the local Hmong community, retired educators Peter Flick and Carolyn Collins, and Dr. William Davis. Members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions of the panel members and address the issues discussed in Fadiman's engaging book. This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Winona Reads is sponsored by the Friends of the Winona Public Library, the Winona Public Library, The American Association of University Women (AAUW), and Community Education. For more information contact Vicki Englich at 454-1215.
