Or this one......
That's the Ohio River's decommissioned dredge which is the sister
ship of Dubuque's steam powered William M. Black . I saw it last
October when attending the Tall Stacks event in Cincinnati.
Seriously though, this is an interesting development. It would solve the
problem of what to do with the Wilkie. The illustrations aren't elaborate enough
to get a feel for what it would do to the view from downtown, but does anyone
really care about that? It would, however, block the Winona Island
Cafe's view. In my opinion, the Cafe has turned what some have
characterized as the tour boat ticket office fiasco into an enterprise that is
doing as much to promote Winona tourism as any other entity.
It's too bad that the boat would have to be raised up and dry docked.
Dubuque's dredge is still floating, but it is protected in its harbor by flood
wall gates. The site plan seems to show minimal disruption of recreational
docking space.
The project could be a good way to leverage the potential of Latch
Island, the restored Old Wagon Bridge, and Agahaming Park. But it needs a
landing for a small pedestrian and bicycle paddle wheel ferry. There was one of
those in Cincinnati. Bicycling across the Interstate Bridge catwalk is somewhat
intimidating, especially if you have small children with you. It could be a
tourist attraction link up with the Wisconsin bicycle trails.
