On Saturday, March 20th, from Noon to 2:00 pm. a âProtest for Peaceâ will be held at the corner of Mankato Avenue and Frontenac Drive, near Community Memorial Hospital in Winona. Everyone is encouraged to stand for part or all of the 2 hours. Signs will be available or people can make their own, expressing their beliefs and feelings about the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Dress warmly. Food will be provided by âFood Not Bombs.â Students of all ages and veterans are especially invited.
The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King's remarks express the reactions of many Winona residents to the current occupation of Iraq: âA nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.â
The Winona Protest for Peace is being held in coordination with the âGlobal Day of Actionâ in which rallies, demonstrations and marches will be held in cities and towns throughout the world marking the one-year anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of people in over 45 countries around the world and in 36 U.S. states will take to the streets to demand an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq and to the Bush empire building agenda.
The theme of the protest is against the invasion, occupation and corporate control of Iraq and to bring the soldiers home now. Participation in this protest will provide an opportunity for Winona Area residents to express their disagreement with the U.S. involvement into the quagmire of the Iraq occupation.
Winona Peacemakers understand the need to protest and loudly oppose the current U.S. government policies in Iraq with the words of car-maker Henry Ford in mind: â Show me who makes a profit from war and Iâll show you how to stop the war.â
If Winona residents are not able to join the Protest for Peace, they can support the event by driving by the protest anytime during the 2 hours and honk to show their solidarity.
On Thursday, March 18, at 4:30 to 5:30 pm. the twice-monthly Peace Vigil will be held in Winona's Central Park on the corner of Broadway and Main Streets. All veterans, students and supportive community members are welcome to participate in the Peace Vigil. Signs will also be available at the Vigils or people can bring their own.
The Protest for Peace and the Vigil are sponsored by the Winona Area Peacemakers. For more information call: 454-3322.
