[Winona Online Democracy]

These posts reminded me of a recent trip to Albert Lea. I happened to walk
through a mall that had had a Wal-Mart as an anchor store. The Wal-Mart was
closed and there were a few local merchants and one retail chain (Jo-Ann
Fabrics) trying to make it there. The whole mall was run down and really
smoke-filled from a restuarant. It was very sad. I don't know if it was
due to a new super Wal-Mart built elsewhere in town or just the economic
depression in that area, but it certainly wasn't evidence of all the
promises we seem to be hearing about what Wal-Mart can bring!!!
