No need for Craig to check . . . the email that
Phil and Mary Jean are referring to does contain a malicious worm (virus) and
is NOT from mnforum.org. This is actually the same exact email message
that was sent to the list on February 27th that I responded to with a message
warning people about.
This particular virus/email is currently widely
circulating around the internet and is known as the "Beagle" or "Bagel" virus.
For those interested in the details, you can visit the Symantec Security
Response website at:
To reiterate what Phil said:
1. Everyone should install anti-virus software on
their computers and make sure to keep the virus definitions
current.
2. You should never ever open an attachment that
you were not expecting -- even if it appears to be from someone you
know. If you think a friend or acquaintance sent you a document to read
or program to run, you should send an email back to check with them first
before opening it. This is because it is very common for viruses to be
spread by appearing to come from people you know when they were actually sent
by someone else.

I agree with Phil that none of us should open
this even though the sender seems legit. I'd like Craig to check this
our with the e-democracy folks for us. Craig?

I
wouldn't open anything from someplace you don't know - especially if they
ask you to open an attachment. Sounds very fishy to me.
There are a lot of these very "real" looking e-mail messages going
around. You should have a virus protection software program on your
own computer (McAfee, Norton, etc.) and then you can ignore anything like
this that someone sends.

Is this an e-mail I should
open?

Dear user of "Mnforum.org" mailing

Our antivirus software has detected a large
ammount of viruses outgoing
from your email account,
you may use our free anti-virus tool to clean
up
your computer software.
For details see the

For security reasons attached file is password

I am not aware of any viruses, and need
advice about opening this.
