To Phil Carlson, Mpls:
Many people deal with the subject, but assuming you
wish to avoid individuals whose involvement is largely ideological, I'd
recommend Dr. Kenneth E. Stone, Professor of Economics, Iowa State University
(515-294-2701). I do not know him personally, but I do know that he has written
much on the subject and has consulted throughout the world. He did speak to some
business people in Winona last year with regard to Walk Mart's
impact.

Friends,
I have been
asked to speak at a state conference for housing and redevelopment officials
on big box development. My background is city planning and zoning, so I
will speak to the ways that cities can develop site planning guidelines,
zoning standards, architectural controls, etc. to make the development more
palatable, but I am not an expert on the larger questions of economic impacts,
social impacts, etc. From the voluminous discussion in Winona on the new
Wal Mart, are there people you might recommend who can speak to these issues
and bring some good information and insight to these local officials as they
wrestle with big box stores? Any names and ideas you could pass along
would be welcome.
Phil Carlson,
Mpls
