[Winona Online Democracy] I attended the presentation of the proposed memorial park to be built next to Public Work's central garage expecting to be irate about the city putting such effort into an out of the way location. Especially so, since prior to the meeting I spent a couple of hours cleaning up trash and weeds downtown by the levee and wondered how that department can find time for dressing up their building and grounds when we rely on volunteer clean-up events to make our downtown business district presentable.
After learning more about the project, I agree with the city council that it is a worthwhile endeavor. An unintended consequence might be to foster the notion that just because a location is zoned industrial and not particularly historic, it can still benefit from landscaping and attention to architectural details. And while casual tourists are unlikely to see the park, there are homes nearby whose views would be somewhat improved. Plus, the restoration and display of the old steamroller (not really steam powered, but commonly referred to as such) can be a design trial run for the Thompson Dredge project at the levee. John N.
