I agree with Bob Sebo - the little guy who was just court-martialed definitely did wrong and should be punished.  It won't end there - isn't this standard prosecutorial case-building in a crime involving many people?  You hold the little guys' feet to the fire and they squeal on the bigger guys. This whole deal is far from over . . .  I'm waiting for it to land with a large ugly thud at Donald Rumsfeld's door.

Evert...I'm replying to your post hoping no one will get mad at me for addressing a national issue.  We have a group for non-Winona issues, don't we?  For sure and certain no one has used it for a long time...I forget these details...I'm a big picture kind of guy  :-)

Evert, this young man did wrong, even if he was a very small fish...and the government has accelerated his prosecution so that he can act as a government witness at the trial of others.  His sentence is expected to be reduced as a reward for this participation.

My understanding is that it was a standard plea agreement.  The government chose to pursue a special, rather than general, court martial against the specialist because the maximum penalty it can mete out is what he got.  A general court martial can sentence you to death or anything it wants.  Now if this soldier does what the government wants him to do as a witness, his sentence will be reduced or perhaps commuted.

That's my understanding.  I want to know what happens to Richard Sanchez.  He put military intelliegence in charge of that prison, but contends that the military police still managed the facility.  That makes no sense to me.

The young man who actually blew the whistle is being glorified in the press, and getting anonymous death threats, as well.  There are also now new photos...two of which purport to show two soldiers gloating over the corpse of a dead Iraqi who had been injured during capture by Navy SEALS.   The body was packed in ice.  This is a Reuters report.  There apparently is a new whistle blower.
