Winona State's Counselor Education Department always brings in provocative speakers. Please consider attending Willie Fleming's talk.

Major Public Address Free and Open to the Public Tuesday, June 22, 7-8:30 p.m. Maxwell Leadership Center 8th and Johnson Streets Winona State University Main Campus
Dismantling Racism in American Schools with Willie Fleming, Ph.D.
The fundamental elements of racism in today's society are still with us, and the effects of racism have a critical negative impact on the educational success of minority students. Dr. Fleming will draw on his own many experiences working with inner city youth, sharing both successes and failures as he has worked on his lifelong goal to decrease the effects of racism on the students with whom he works. He also will discuss diversity issues with a particular view toward our responsibilities, more global self-awareness and increased consciousness-raising for all.
Dr. Fleming's address will be the point of departure for a major workshop from 9-3 the next day on "Cultural and Racial Identity Models: Tools for Relating to the Needs and Issues of Minority Students." This workshop can be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit (for those not seeking college credit, it also is available for a nominal workshop-only fee). To earn the 1/2 semester credit, participants must attend both the Tuesday evening public address and the Wednesday workshop sessions. On-site registration is available for the workshop, and further registration information is available through Winona State's Counselor Education Department, 507-457-5335.
Willie Fleming, Ph.D., is Counselor and Coordinator of the Alcohol and Drug Education Program at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor of Human Development and Psychological Counseling at Appalachian State University, where he taught as well as served as Director of Multicultural Student Development. He is a dynamic and much-sought presenter on multicultural issues, racial and cultural identity, and overcoming the effects of racism.
