By fine dining, I was thinking of restaurants along the order of Harbor View in Pepin and Currents, in Alma. Excellent, fresh ingredients, expertly prepared, and expensive.

So many of us leave town just for a good restaurant meal like the ones they offer. Cedar Valley is very good, as was the first Holmes Landing in Fountain City. We really do need something in our own downtown, however.

I can't afford to eat at these restaurants every week, but I know people who can and do. They leave town and take their money with them. If we are to host the Shakespeare Festival each summer, I hope we can find someone who has the talent and the desire to take a chance here in Winona. I know that a large portion of our population prefers all-you-can-eat buffets, but if someone would take a chance here, I would do my best to support the effort.

Phil has a point about lunch crowds, entertainment, etc. But if so many people drive great distances to eat a really wonderful meal, I would bet they would also support a local restaurant that catered to those tastes. We might even become a destination for people south and north of us--just like Harbor View and Currents.
