Grand Excursion 04 was a fantastically good event. The reason GE 04
worked so well as allot of hard work by many volunteers willing to make it
happen. It is very difficult to keep that momentum going. We should help
Victorian fair and Steamboat Days sustain themselves. I am sure they would
appreciate the extra help.

Interesting comments from Les Hittner on the GE04 bike route and continuing
the restaurant thread...

I don't think discussion of Bluff Country restaurants outside Winona was
getting off track at all. One of the original posts related to GRSF folks
looking for ideas about where to go for interesting food, so some were
offered as suggestions. More importantly, some of those nearby successes
may offer models for what could happen in Winona...as Les points out later
on in his post.

The Harbor View is interesting because it proves the exception to Phil
Carlson's theory that you need a business lunch trade or a vibrant
entertainment district...I'm pretty sure Pepin WI has neither. They sure do
have the river, though. It would be interesting to know what portion of the
HV's customers come in on boats or meet people who do. But in a sense they
have become their own destination by virtue of great cooking, pleasant
ambience, quirky waitstaff...So maybe it just takes the right entrepreneur
to come along and get something going?

A tourism-related question...does anyone know if the City is contemplating
ways to use the Levee in the future for events similar to what was there
for GE04? While I was down there that day, it seemed to me that an weekend
event similar to that could maybe happen once or twice during the summer on
an annual basis, some time between Steamboat Days and Victorian Fair.
Something less commercial than Steamboat Days and less special interest
than Victorian Fair. How about a Winona Summer Arts Fest?

This makes it hard to plan the day."
