In addition to seeing "Fahrenheit 9/11," it might also be a good idea to
prepare for the discussion by reading up on the issues regarding the
accuracy of the assertions Michael Moore makes in the film. Of course, there
are countless articles and websites attacking the film, many of which are
quite rabid, and will probably not be very convincing to you if you are
inclined to accept Moore's viewpoint. But the two articles I list below are
mostly dispassionate and entirely focused on facts.

Newsweek ran a column by Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball titled "More
Distortions From Michael Moore," which addresses a few of the film's most
egregious inaccuracies:

Spinsanity.org published an article titled "Fahrenheit 9/11: The temperature
at which Michael Moore's pants burn," which is more extensive than the
Newsweek piece, and provides links to some of their other Moore-related
stories:

Spinsanity.org is an excellent, nonpartisan site devoted to critiquing
political rhetoric and debunking propaganda from all segments of the
political spectrum. Michael Moore has kept them especially busy. I suggest
visiting their home page and typing "Michael Moore" into their search field.

There are, of course, many other websites that are critical of Moore, most
of which are partisan in their perspective, and exhibit a level of zeal
approaching that of Moore himself. Although these sites mostly preach to the
choir, they can sometimes be enlightening because they do not limit
themselves to pinpointing specific errors of fact, but instead present more
general critiques of Moore's films, books, public statements, and overall
worldview. Here are two of them:

Moore's responses to the "wackos" who criticize him can be found here:

On a side note: Since one of the major topics on this mailing list has been
the possible displacement of small businesses that may result from the
arrival of a Wal-Mart store in Winona, here is Michael Moore's opinion on
the subject:

"The small hardware salesman, the small clothing store salespersons, Jesse
the Barber who signed his name three different times on three different
petitions to recall me from the school board. F**k all these small
businesses - f**k 'em all! Bring in the chains. The small businesspeople are
the rednecks that run the town and suppress the people. F**k 'em all. That's
how I feel."(1)

Of course, this has nothing to do with "Fahrenheit 9/11," but I think it
sheds some light on the thought processes by which Moore forms his opinions,
and the prism through which he views the world.
