[Winona Online Democracy] I haven't seen the movie - probably won't bother - but it seems to me that this present thread is a good example of "we see (read, hear, etc.) only what we want to see (read, hear, etc.) and what reinforces our own opinion(s)." Without going to any WEB sites and confining my reading only to the information being presented it appears that Moore is in fact generalizing and using his "own town" as an example of that generalization.
Why else would Moore include a statement like, "...They were the Republicans in the town, they were in the Kiwanas, the Chamber of Commerce - people that kept the town all white..."? Republicans, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce? That doesn't lead me to conclude he is referring only to a town in Michigan. That doesn't lead me to believe he is not revealing a bit - no a lot - of "who he is." The author of the quoted article seems to believe that Moore is speaking in a more general sense. He begins the paragraph with all the implied obsenity in it by stating: "Moore seemed to embrace capitalistic Darwinism..." I don't believe Olson's post does this but...What's wrong with attempting to "bias the reader against [for] Moore." (or the war in Iraq, or the Republican Party, or John Kerry, or uncontrolled expansion, etc., etc.)? Every post cannot be "issue neutral," if these discussions are ever to go anywhere. -Leslie Hittner _______________________________________________ This message was posted to Winona Online Democracy All messages must be signed by the senders actual name.
