[Winona Online Democracy] I'm in agreement with Dwayne Voegli and Nick Coleman on their concern about free speech and dissent in this year's presidential race. Coleman's hope for more tolerance of disturbing views is right on the money - and we have the opportunity here in WOD to practice that in microcosm. Let's make sure we are respectful of various views that might be expressed here.
I have to tweak my friend Dwayne a bit though - I'm not sure even with the hardball tactics being deployed by the Bush campaign that "the former Soviets and Pravda are being put to shame". We should be scrupulously protective of our rights to dissent, but these campaign tactics are still mild and rare compared to many current and former regimes around the world. Let's not exaggerate for effect.
