This is very well put. I used to attend
school board meetings when my children were in public schools. I was
talked 'down to' and ignored when addressing the board. Perhaps one or two
members would look at us when we addresssed our concerns on various issues, the
others would be talking among themselves. This told me that they had already
made up their minds and nothing anyone said would change it. (aren't they
elected to do what the voters want, not their own personal agendas?). This
is where my distrust of the school board started and it left a very big
scar.
I do not think the new middle school (sorry
for dragging on something that cannot now be changed) was built 'for the
children'. Some people in the community had their own personal agendas and
by God they were going to have a new school.
I have heard nothing but good things about
the charter schools in the Winona district. Good for the parents and
small communities (Dakota) for keeping thier schools alive.

From my view, I would say that we have to learn
to trust in their judgement. I did vote for the levy because some very
convincing people made some very good points about it.
But, the actions of previous Boards and the way
the problems were handled means to me that the present board has to prove
their reasoning until they have won my trust again. This may be hard because
there are people out here in the public who believe that they don't want to
listen to us, they just want us, like good little boys and girl to shut up and
do what we are told. I have a Sister who spent her life in Education and she
and I don't always see Eye to eye, but, we communicate with eachother and when
we are through talking we know the reasons for our position. The previous
Boards, seemed to, in my estimation worked under the idea of planned
obselesence, and then when the site was so far gone fought to get it
replaced by bringing in outside help to bolster it's position. This angered
many and will take a long time to correct. I'm Polish-Armerican and just as
Stubborn as an Irishman and also an Arian which means I am very opinionated.
And I am open to convincing ,but, those who try to convince me had better have
more than "It's for the Children" on their mind when they talk to me. Because
those of us who went to school beforethe Computers and Calculators and other
supposed Time savers learned much
Better than some of the students today.
