"60
Minutes" did a segment on the Echo Boomers, aired a couple of weeks ago for the
second time. I found the transcript on the Web. Basically it was how the
generation of young people that are now in their early 20's have been so
protected and given so much false praise that they were having a hard time in
the real world. One CEO they interviewed said they could not think long term,
everything was instant gratification.
Luckily there are exceptions, but those young people
get very little press.
Most
of the young people I wrote about in the Science Olympiad article are still
beating most of the adults in model aviation competition. The US Junior team won
the World Indoor Championship again in 2004 in Romania while the US adults lost
to the Romanians.
Interesting, in talking to the father of the young man
that has been World Champion the last two times, the father had attended Winona
State University. The family now lives in Ohio.
People tell me in some schools the Science Olympiad
competition is bigger than sports. But these are the minority exceptions. You
wonder how long it will be before another Bill Gates type shows the world what
ingenuity can come from within this country.

To those who read the Star Tribune regularly, I
apologize for the frequent articles I post here. But I just had to share this
one with the group--comments? Or, more specifically, since I believe that
underachievement is a community issue as well as a school issue, what can we
do as a community to inspire enthusiasm about learning rather than the
ubiquitous "junk culture" that invades our lives? The late Susan Sontag said,
"Be serious, be passionate, wake up!" How do we promote this?
