Below is an announcement for a guest speaker coming to Winona State next
week. It is interesting that he is speaking on the need for the arts and
creativity in the emerging economy- when our K-12 schools' budgets are
having to back off and not support the arts!

Subject: WSU-Presentation on the role of the arts in the emerging economy
Winona State University presents a Keynote Address
by Neill Archer Roan:
Creativity and the Role of the Arts in the Emerging Economy
Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, 7:30 p.m.
Performing Arts Center Mainstage, Winona State University Campus
Funded through the WSU New University Grant Program, this event is
free and open to the public.
In recent times, the principal engines of wealth creation and jobs in the
United States have transformed four times. The nation has been fueled by
agriculture, industry, service, and by information. As wealth-creation means
continue to transform, creative competencies have become critical core
competencies among competing nations and economies. Today, one must not only
be a knowledge worker but also a creative worker. Often survival depends
on an ability to innovate. Many wonder: is higher education tooled up to
meet this challenge?
A keen grasp of aesthetics, particularly a strategic understanding of how
beauty manages evidence of excellence, is a key competitive strategy among
peoples and nations. What is the role of the arts in preparing for an
economy where aesthetic and artistic fluency is on a strategic par with
science, engineering, and mathematics? How must a refined interdisciplinary
educational strategy emerge to ensure the economic viability of our cities,
states, regions, and nation, while we value, as well, the work of artists
and artisans whose impulses to create and share are tied to human needs, not
marketplace appetites?
More importantly, how do we balance the conscription of cultural and
creative fluency for marketplace purposes with our deeper need to make sense
of our human experience?
