BEING EFFECTIVE BUT GOING BEYOND MINNESOTA NICE

This month's new episode of  HBC's Channel 25 "Working Together" series, which airs for first time Thursday February 17th at  7:30 p.m., considers the topic of human communication, especially in very challenging interactions- called Crucial Conversations.

Working Together  is produced  in collaboration with the Winona Council for Quality. It takes a closer look at the positive people, businesses, and
organizations and  the changes taking place across the community that are
creating a solid future for Winona. The monthly show is broadcast each week at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. Saturday, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday on HBC Channel 25.  A new topic is offered the third Thursday of each month.    Working Together has a web site www.winonaworks.com   where there is  more background on the series and a discussion forum for viewers to interact about this new common sense for Winona.

In this episode HBC Host, Mary Wilder, interacts with panelists: Rev, Richard Spencer , a pastor at Pleasant Valley Church:  Ann Mac Donald, director of the Winona State Leadership Center: and Bill Gould, Chief People Resources Officer at Winona Health.  The program also features video comments by: WAPS Superintendent Paul Durand, emd Founder Dan Rukavina, and Pastor Sonny Misar of Living Light Church.

Below the panelists give insights into: the 2 Choices in Crucial Conversations, the tie to authentic kindness, and the hard work of having fact based stories.

Ann Mac Donald explains the difference between making Choice1 or Choice 2 and the benefits of Choice 2.

"The Choice 1 behavior  is to be right ,to win , look good. Do we want to keep the peace ,like Minnesota Nice, and avoid conflict at all costs or do we want to save face?.The flip side of that is the Choice 2 behavior which  is do we want to learn , do we want to find the truth, produce the result , and
strengthen our relationships.  And if we chose the Choice 2 behavior, the
results that we get, in keeping people in that shared dialogue looks so much
different than if we just want to win and get our point across".

Richard Spencer elaborates on the limits of Minnesota Nice and puts it in a  Christian context.

"As Christians we value kindness. Jesus Christ was perhaps the kindest person to ever live . We read in the New Testament that kindness was the fruit of the spirit at work in a person's life.  We tend to confuse authentic kindness with just being nice. And in our confusion, we opt for peace keeping rather than peace making. For defending our own territory and just being silent vs. really seeking truth and understanding people.   We talk about people rather than to them. We don't know how to bring together truth and love in something very powerful.  We're just nice".

Bill Gould talks about the personal and organizational hard work necessary to live out this authentic kindness.

"I work a lot at a personal level in mastering my own stories and looking at
different facts that are out there.  Trying to make sure that I do a good job
of gathering  the information that I need and not jumping to conclusions based on the limited information that I have. This is very hard work , and I think to be effective at it, and to have an impact in your organization , marriage or any other relationship , it takes a lot of work and you have to constantly go back to it".
