I recently wanted to change trash removal companies as Waste Management is just getting too expensive.

I found out that customers have a contract with Waste Management that automatically renews itself every three years for another three year term unless you send them a certified letter sixty days in advance of your expiration date.   I had no idea I had signed a contract with this trash removal company.  I was sent copies of the contract/lease and sure enough my signature is on it.

I urge anyone who has Waste Management to check with them to see when your contract expires and write it down to keep track of your renewal dates.

There are many other companies out there that are more reasonably priced but I cannot use them for another year and a half.

Waste Management did lower my monthly fee because I cannot afford their rates any longer. But it is still almost twice what another company would charge to pick up my trash.

I question why there is a Winona County surcharge on my statement.  I did not get a reasonable explanation for this charge. I dont even know what it is.  I was told it was a Minnesota tax by a Waste Management representative.  What does it do? Who gets the money? Winona County?

We consumers need to be aware of what is going on with companies we do business with.  I had no idea I should be keeping track of a trash contract.
