Great discussion going on here! I really apreciate Tonia Schmidt's perspective on the industry! Thanks so much for the information. It really helps to see the big picture.

My in-laws were in the retail gas business in the 50's and 60's and I've heard a lot about the "gas wars" and about what the station had to offer in those days (remember when someone filled the tank, checked your oil and washed your windshield, too?). I think the business was less complex in those days and gas prices between stations made a big difference to consumers--(also S & H green stamps!).

Today the factors influencing our retail gasoline choices seem much more complicated since most stations in a given area will have the same prices for gas. It sounds (from Chuck's info) that in the metro areas people may tend to notice a wider range (like my Mom scouts in Milwaukee).

In the end, though, I think the thing that will never change is that folks will frequent retail stores where they receive friendly, quality service. I know it was true for my in-laws station and Tom's got that one nailed in his stores, too!!

BTW--Does anyone know how we switched from a "Price of Gas" thread to the "Winona Digest" subject thread? Just a reminder to respond or reply with the same subject in order to better follow the conversation! I think it also makes a difference to those who receive a "digest" form of the posts--maybe Craig or one of the e-dem folks can chime in on this for us? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Severson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I would differ with you. There is more competition than ever. And some of it like the religious group that was selling below cost (which in petroleum
does not include any expenses other than cost of product) in Anoka have
motives that are hard to understand. They do however put small family
businesses at risk of going broke, because of their loss leader pricing.

We have seen all retail demand more efficiency to get a share of the
consumers dollar. There fore I submit that all business is more competitive
today than ever before in time.
