For anyone who may be interested in the community, WSU received this
announcement this evening:

Date: Monday, September 12, 2005, from 7-9 pm
Where: Somsen Auditorium
General Topic: A panel discussion about Hurricane Katrina

Dr. Steven Allard, Geoscience, from WSU will speak about the geology of
the gulf coast region and why New Orleans was particularly vulnerable to
a hurricane of this magnitude.

Mr. Todd Shea, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist from the National
Weather Service office of La Crosse, Wis., will speak about the evolution of
Katrina as it became a devastating hurricane. He oversees severe
weather operations for 28 counties, 7 of which are in southeast Minnesota
including Winona County.

"Dr. Joan Francioni, Computer Science, from WSU and a native of New
Orleans will speak about planned service-learning activities, for WSU,
SMU, and the community members, directly related to Hurricane Katrina
relief efforts."

The second hour will be devoted to questions and answers from the
audience. In addition to the panel members, there will be people
available to address questions regarding psychology, medical and disease
issues, economics, and political issues. We also hope to include a
local Red Cross member.

We hope this will be the first of a series of talks about various
aspects of natural disasters with an emphasis on Hurricane Katrina.
This is an especially vital message because we in Winona are also
protected from the Mississippi River by a levee system. In addition,
this will be a long-term recovery effort from Hurricane Katrina and this
educational piece will help to keep our community informed about what is
happening in the gulf states and what we can do to assist them
throughout the year, as well as how to learn from this disaster.
