[Winona Online Democracy]

My 1930 map of the city shows the Great Western RR where Hiway 61 is...the
Chicago, Milwaukee, Saint Paul, & Pacific was the line that crosses most of
town east-west...and the Chicago and Northwestern came in along the river
past the commercial harbor and through downtown along the river to the east
end and out. I think that last line was originally the Winona & St. Peter
and was the first railroad built in the early 1860's...they built the
current DM&E line up through the arches and on to Rochester and, of course,
St. Peter.

The train lines were hugely important for Winona...Winona was a significant
transfer point for people and goods.

Originally the trains were not considered a nuisance or an environmental
hazard...they were progress! I can only imagine how good that first rail
link to LaCrosse looked to people who were accustomed to
being...literally...frozen in during the winter.

Now however...Im a big fan of avoiding trains...I like the proposal.
