[Winona Online Democracy]

Don’t forget that Winona does have a transit system. I know that it’s nowhere near as convenient as using a car and is unlikely to ever serve what might be considered to be our suburbs: Wincrest, Valley Oaks, the future Phillips development and beyond. But for the “island” where the population is more concentrated, it has potential. Of course the conundrum is that without more riders, service won’t improve, and without expanded service, people will be reluctant to use it. In the not too distant future we might be glad that we have the system in place to build upon.

When I mention service improvements, I’m not trying to be critical. For myself, the bus service couldn’t be much better unless they stopped at my door (which, by the way, they will do for a small surcharge) with hot coffee and a free newspaper. The schedule and route works for my particular commuting needs and made it possible for our household to maintain only one car. Getting rid of the car is where the real monetary savings are.

According to information on City Hall’s web site, only one percent of our workforce uses the bus to get to their jobs. That’s slightly less than for bicycles, which I can also use for commuting as well as general transportation since I live in town.

Subject: [Winona] Economizing on fuel

Hello:

Thank you Les for your thoughtful post about economizing on fuel, touching on the carpooling issue which is an interest of mine.  You had some excellent ideas and I can find nothing to disagree with in your suggestions.

However, no single strategy will help us reduce our consumption of fossil fuels, which is obviously intimately related to our use of cars.  We need to take the baby steps you outlined, but we need to encourage larger changes too.

For example, I believe that ridesharing is relevant to everyone, even though many still need to be convinced that it is worth trying out…..
