Paul, I saw that segment also and you brought up some very good points.
I remember reading an article several years ago about the US math and
science scores and it really bothered me that the US was second from the
bottom in the world at the high school level.  About all I see as having
changed from then, is there is increasing need for competent people in
science and engineering, and that a few large corporations realize that
their survival depends on having qualified people to hire in the future.
Recently IBM announced a program to put some of their employees in
schools teaching science and math.

Money, or lack of it is only part of the problem, attitude is more
of the problem.  I have tried to do my small part with the model
airplane sessions to have young people actually build something with
their hands and understand the science behind it to make it work well.
Students that show up for this do well, but getting more than a half
dozen students interested in this seems impossible.  I have volunteered
to speak about my work with computers and no one appears interested in
that either.

If other community members have other ideas, I would sure like to hear
them.
