[Winona Online Democracy]

Some comments have been posted on the thread of property taxes and the ability of government to condemn property (under eminent domain proceedings) for public purposes.  While this can be disrupting and devastating to the individuals involved, it is not part of a totalitarian dictatorship or monarchy with absolute power corrupting all.  Such decisions (in the U.S.A.) are made by democratically elected city councils or county boards, who are ultimately responsible to ordinary citizens in the voting booth and to higher courts for exercise of their legal authority.

One can agree or disagree with a particular decision or law within our democratic system, but that doesn't make it wrong in some ultimate sense.

P.S. And yes, we all own our own homes and property, but we don't put out our own fires, drive ourselves to the hospital in an emergency, chase down our own burglars, or patch our own stretch of road.  Collectively, we hire professionals to do these things.
