[Winona Online Democracy]

I'm not familiar with the speaker John mentioned, but I heard an interesting spot on WI Public Radio last week on this topic. The guest was talking about how the use of corn and other agricultural crops being converted to auto fuel (e.g. ethanol) will affect the economy. Basically he was saying that when it becomes a better deal to sell those crops to fuel producers it will drive up the price of food due to competition for the food supply.

An aside was that this speaker advocated develpment of "plug in" vehicle technology to charge batteries with wind energy and to eliminate our dependency on oil and clean up our air in the process.

What do others know about these issues? I'm thinking that this relates locally to our recent interest in wind power and our state's strong agricultural interests as well.

Subject: [Winona] Lecture at Winona County Gov't Center

[Winona Online Democracy]

Speaking about projects related to petroleum (Winona's wish list for road
improvements):

I ran across a web site announcing a lecture this Wednesday, January 18,
at the County Government Center, 177 Main Street at 7pm by the author of
a film to be shown at WSU this weekend. The film is about oil and suburban
development and the lecture is about oil and agriculture.

I haven't seen anything in the local media yet. The web site:
