Today I looked into the revenue numbers for most of the major
railroads. The result was that every major railroad I looked at,
including the ones that pass through Winona, possessed sequentially
higher revenue numbers since 2002. This is not the best metric to gauge
rail traffic through Winona, however, with or without DM&E coal trains
it is very likely that rail traffic will continue to increase through
Winona. Rails will continue to increase because rails are a more fuel
efficient way to transport products across the country.
Perhaps the bridge would be a waste of money if oil returned to $30 per
barrel thereby removing the premium that rail possesses over trucks,
the United States ceased or dramatically reduced importing products
from Asia that would necessitate an increased volume of
transcontinental rail traffic, and if 25% of the produced coal did not
originate from one coal field, but somehow I doubt any of those will
happen in the near future.
