While most seniors would agree Medicare D
is cumbersome, confusing and of questionable benefit for most Americans. It
is a savings for those with the lowest incomes based on information being
reported from several sources. I would agree the major beneficiary was
the insurance industry with the drug companies running a distant second.
I would disagree on our ability to compete
in the international market place with those countries with Universal Health
Care in particular the Canadian’s and European’s. We are and
will continue to beat them in the market place because our workers have higher productivity
rates, lower benefit costs and less government tax burden.

We must, and will eventually, have in this country universal
health care with a single payer. Think Medicare for all or the
Canadian system (but a bit better funded). This will save at least 10% to
20% overall which will enable full coverage of all for all services with
no additional cost. I am not the expert but I have been following the
debate and in my opinion the facts speak for themselves. The HMOs
and drug companies were the only ones to benefit greatly from Medicare
Part D. Congress made special provisions to benefit
them. Minnesota and others have made provisions
in public programs to benefit HMOs which have cost much more and required
cutting service and eligibility. We can not compete internationally when
the cost of health care has to be included in our cost but not in the
cost of competitors from other Nations with universal health care.
We have the worst health care statistics at the most cost of any industrialized
nation. It must stop and we will have to force a stop to the cycle of money
going to politicians controlling the health care system in this country.

Since the State of Maryland proposed and passed legislation to mandate
companies with over 10,000 employees in their state with a mandate to spend
8% for healthcare and now the Minnesota unions are now proposing similar
types of mandates should the State set the example with their own programs?
Should Minnesota require all companies, cities or counties accepting grants
for tourism etc. require not only the living wage formula, for their
community, be the minimum amount paid but mandate that all entities who
request and receive state grants or contracts also pay a minimum of 8% of
the gross wages for the healthcare of any worker regardless of the number of
employees or if they come from the private or public sectors?
The other question it raises is why shouldn't all retail, tourism,
manufacturing,
service, government and construction employers regardless of size
be subject to the same rules and will this result in higher prices or lower
wages?
