Several months ago, to use as a fact-finding tool,
I offered portions of my personal Wilkie files to Mayor Miller, who
cross-referenced them with the City Manager,
Eric Sorenson, as to their factuality. As I can
recall, the Julius C. Wilke Steamboat Center is owned by, and operated by, and
cared for by its Board of
Directors. That Board is to be made up of
representatives of certain interests within the city. I do not know
who is now a member of that Board, their
qualifications, and their affiliations, or how they
may be contacted. As I asked the question on Monday night, there was not
one person there to represent the Wilkie and its interests. Mr. Hittner
has asked questions that deserve answers. And, as of the inspection done
today by Winona City Staff, the Wilkie is closed.
If I may comment...that's not at all good PR during
Steamboat Days, or any time. There are families (Younger, Nelson,
Kohner, Evenson and others) in Winona who have literally poured blood,
sweat, tears.money, time, sleepless nights,
their expertise, their talents into this "boat that don't float" trying to keep
it a contributing concern. They are to be commended for their efforts. Those who have beautiful memories of
events on the Wilkie should cherish them, they cannot be
duplicated.
There will be more meetings.

The current edition of the Winona Post has an
informative article on the Wilkie situation. Still, many of the questions Les
has asked remain to be answered more fully. On November 8, 2004,
Arlene Prosen, who had resigned from the Wilkie Board "at a time of great
contention," wrote on WOD that she could tell the "entire story" of
the Wilkie. For some reason no one took her up on the offer, at least as far
as WOD participants as a whole were concerned. With her knowledge of the board
and its history, her current assessment would be valuable, and I'm sure
she could respond to Les's questions.

Good point, Les, I too have wondered about that
board. I think that it is run entirely by a Mr. Swazey (sp). It
appears from the e-mail I receive that he does not hold meetings and does
not report on the activities or finances of the board.

I checked the Minnesota Secretary of State listing of Minnesota
corporations (including non-profits). I could not find a match to "Wilkie"
that was in Winona and could possibly have been the corporation guided by
the "Wilkie Board" referenced in the Winona Daily News Tuesday.
The last time I was critical of the Wilkie on WOD (a few years
back) I received a letter via USPS adminishing me and stating that I
should join the board and become a part of the solution (I paraphrase.)
Who does run the Wilkie anyway? What is the name of the organization
that is guided by the "Wilkie Board"? Who are the board members? Why has
the city not held the "Wilkie Board" accountable since at least 2003? Does
the "Wilkie Board" have an address? How does the city communicate with the
"Wilkie Board"? Is Paul Sweazy the only conduit to that organization? How
long has he been the "chair" or "head" of the "Wilkie Board"?
I think if we can begin to understand the "Wilkie Board" we may be on
our way towards understanding the "Wilkie Problem."
