Hello WOD users:

Some of you may have heard about an upcoming event.  It is called Try It!  Transportation Options Week, October 4-11.  With support from the City of Winona and many others, a variety of events are highlighted.  On Friday, October 6, you can ride the bus for free, on all routes, all days.  On Saturday, Midtown Foods, Bluff Country Co-op, and the Winona Farmer's Market are promoting Bike to Market Day, with prizes and musical events.  Then on Tuesday October 10, WAPS is bringing Robert Sweetgall to the Winona Middle School at 6:30 to give his case for the benefits of walking.  Also, we are encouraging people to check out the rideshare board at Bluff Country Co-op, or go to www.erideshare.com, to offer or ask for a carpool match.  All the activities are outlined in greater detail at Sustain Winona's website, www.sustainwinona.org.

Of course, I hope as many people as possible will respond to the invitation to participate in some aspect of the week.  What I am really curious about is:  Is transportation on your radar?

Which of the following reasons would motivate you to change your transportation habits?
  • The price really started to seem high.
  • I knew that fuel emissions were contributing to global warming
  • I could easily get to errands and work using the bus or bicycle.
  • My employer encouraged it more.
  • My faith community or friends were doing it more.
  • I felt I could lose weight by walking or bicycling more.

What prevents you from using the bicycle more for transportation?

  • There is poor bike access from my neighborhood to where I need to go.
  • My employer doesn’t encourage/accommodate bike use.
  • I am worried about bicycle safety on Winona streets.
  •  I am not physically fit for bicycle use.
  •  The bicycle is not flexible enough for all the places I need to go.
What coping measures will you investigate FIRST if fuel prices go up again, reaching whatever threshold level it takes to get your attention?  Things like a more fuel efficient vehicle, carpooling, bicycling, telecommuting, or cutting back on other expenses come to mind as possible responses.

Thanks for of you who come out from under to respond.

Martha Greenwald
