I thought XP Home was not designed for networking - of any type? I
would look at the OS, upgrade them to Professional.

Actually, I've found out a bit more. Turns out it's a D-Link card, in a
laptop running XP Home edition. I've given the user an Avaya card to
try, and the same thing happens. After 5 minutes, it still has a signal,
but drops it's ip config. If I do a broadcast ping on that computer, it
seems to bring it back. Or if the user does a ipconfig /release and an
ipconfig /renew that seems to bring it back as well. Weird...

Hi Matt,
Don't know if this is your answer but it sure sounds similar to a
problem I just resolved. I just finished working with a user with a
linksys card (their 'g' version, model WPC54G) in a Dell (I believe)
with XP Pro. Who claimed it worked fine in some areas on campus but
failed in others. Turns out it worked fine with Cisco 350s but not with
Cisco 1100s. In his case.....his laptop restarted completely after
about 5 minutes!! Of course, I didn't believe it but.....he proved it
to me. Turns out that this particular linksys card has a problem with a
particular cardbus controller (Texas Inst. I think) for some PCMCIA
slots in some laptops (lots of 'somes'). I found an explanation
somewhere on www.linksys.com (can't seem to find it now and can't
remember the exact details). Anyway, as suggested, I had him upgrade
his card to the latest-greatest firmware and the problem went away. I'm
not even going to try to explain why it would behave differently between
different type of access points.......but....don't really care now! ;+)

........hope this helps.......thx..........Jamie
