This is a real struggle. You can ignore the client cards but as things get more complex, I tend to feel it's better to spend some time in the card testing and recommendations.
We are about to ban SMC for example because they see to get confused where others cards work fine.
The original Orinoco golds were the best cards because they were simply plug and play. Driver and application support was great.
Proxim purchased the brand from Lucent/Agere and things have never been the same. They keep changing the what you get when you buy "Orinoco" and they failed to deliver WPA compatibility on the previous cards.
With 802.11g, it's difficult to determine which is best for near "plug and play". So far, we are recommending the Linksys bg and abg PCCards but we are not really happy. Linksys is impossible to work with in our opinion.
In EDU environments we have a higher density of Mac and Linux users and Linux drivers for the 802.11g have been next to non-existent.
The Cisco are nice high end cards but the 100 mW power is not required, the power consumption is a little much and they are too much for our users
We really want to standardize on a WiFi/WPA card that works well and is cost effective.

We are reviewing our recommended wireless adapter cards for students. I have drafted some ideas on evaluating the enterprise adapters (Cisco, Lucent, etc.) as well as some of the commercial items students would use in their home networks.
I would be interested in hearing what others have done to evaluate and recommend adapter cards for their students.
