William:

Thanks for sharing. Have you come up with a median/max bandwidth usage in
Mbps per AP, and/or per student?

Kind regards,

Frank

Not for this report, it was only commissioned to study login
times/locations.

We do track external bandwidth usage and enforce quotas for wireless use
(different amounts based on role-- and users can purchase additional
bandwidth). For Spring '07, the long term aggregate wireless usage
accounted for 12% of total commodity Internet consumption for campus. From
Spring '06 to Spring '07 there was a 116% increase in bandwidth consumption
by wireless users. In contrast, median departmental host consumption only
increased 20%. This is congruent with the increase in connect times the
report showed in addition to the increased number of users. The median
consumption of external bandwidth by an individual wireless users is only
27MB/week -- the base allocation is 500MB/week for students. We see ~3% of
students moved to the second class network (56Kbps modem off campus speeds)
in any week for exceeding allocations.

Needless to say, we're ordering more bandwidth for this fall...
