I'm sure that if someone in accounting/legal at that vendor heard that a fellow employee had given even a verbal commitment they would have had their hand slapped. Because of SOX, publicly traded companies may not recognize the revenue for a sale if there are outstanding features that haven't been delivered. That's why you have not heard one vendor provide any written promises because they want to book the revenue. Upgrades delivered via a paid maintenance program bypass this problem because you're paying for new features.
