I think we'll switch back to IOS. I still have two WLSE's in house....
(sarcasm).

I can't comment on others' escalation mixed messages on the code,
although nothing surprises me at this point with the WiSMs. Like
nothing. No thing. Nada. I could come in to work and find them morphing
themselves into bowls of pudding and I wouldn't bat an eye after the
long strange trip we've been on.

But in our current bout, we asked for clarification from the BU and the
highest technical folks. They match our SE, who matches TAC- all say
4.2.176 is the current stable code, and do not subject yourself to 5.x
(which really is at odds with trying to sell 11n or mesh hardware).

Unfortunately for us it's as much about the timing of an upgrade as it
is about finding trustworthy code... we have found that upgrading 2,000+
APs and 24 controllers can take almost a full day, so we normally pull a
"government job" in the middle of the night so the disruption is mostly
done by business hours. After the massive upgrade, we usually have a
couple of dozen APs that go to their happy place and need to either have
PoE shut off and restored, radios turned back on, or to be replaced. And
we've come to realize that we need to go controller by controller
through the command line and verify important timers do not set
themselves back to problematic defaults- seems to happen frequently and
randomly after upgrades.

On the sunny side, despite our controller woes (and I'm convinced we've
had every glamorous major hardware and software issue available in the
catalogue), our n + x hardware layout has been effective at shielding
users from the pain we feel as system admins (so far).

Ah well- at least it's interesting.

Lee,

I'd hate to be in your position but it looks like your only alternative
is to flip a coin and hope for the best.

Just be cautious and pick your poison. Our Cisco escalation engineer
recommended that we should not move to .176 code. Maintenance release
code can and in more cases than not, will create new bugs to deal with.
