Technically, there is a performance impact (your AP will have to perform
more beacons)
Realistically, you won't notice a difference.

There are other solutions.  What model AP's do you have?  Are you using
802.1x?  (Hopefully your using WPA2-Enterprise)  Which RADIUS Server are you
using.

If you answer all those questions, we can tell you how to configure your
Access Point to return a specifc VLAN per user.  (It's called  VSA
attributes, or AV Pairs)  Also called VLAN Override.
