Joe, it's not really a captive portal as such.

We've deployed it in two main ways:
1. Deployed onto a web server, with a link on our captive portal page, which is
accessible prior to login. This will then run Cloudpath's XpressConnect
application on a student's laptop, iDevice, android device etc. and migrate
them across onto the 802.1x based wireless service, prompting for password,
setting up security certificate and checking some basic settings etc.
2. Deployed onto CD's and USB drives to various people on the campus who have
contact with students. It can then be run as a standalone program to set up the
802.1x wireless service, whether the student is on campus or not...

You can see the version we have running on a web server at:
http://network-help.hw.ac.uk/xpressconnect/ (although note the login will fail
at the point where it attempts to migrate you onto our 802.1x based network)

Many Thanks
Peter

After reading the cloudpath pdf datasheet ... Is this not just like a captive
portal? We use a captive portal on our Aruba wireless, and it seems to work in
a similar way.

Not in this specific example, but we do use cloudpath.net xpressconnect to
configure iPads and it works well. perhaps the solution is as simple as
teaching the students how to clear their credentials at the end of class?

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] iPads, Labs/classroom use, 802.1x

Does anyone have experience managing iPads for classrooms (where an iPad is
given to each user and returned at the end of the course, only for the next
class to pick them up)? I'm interested in how to manage credentials in an
802.1x environment (to ensure actions on the network are attributable to the
user at that time). If someone has resolved this, I'd like to speak with
them, we have instructors working on proposals.
