Hi, We used CloudPath XpressConnect for our 802.1x deployment back in December. As a client configuration utility, it's worth every penny. On production day 1, we put a link to the xpressconnect server on our captive portal (allowing access to the server without authing against the captive portal). Within the first few days, over 1000 clients switched over.
You could also have multiple 802.1x profiles - I.E. [802.1x SSID] and Eduroam. A bit tricky but Cloudpath tech support was happy to help. But like everyone said, you could create a profile to work with a captive-portal WLAN, but the product is in no way a captive portal. One nice thing about Cloudpath (aside from configuring Winxp,vista,7/iOS/OSX/Ubuntu/Android), you could set "conflicting SSIDs" - if you are running an 802.1x network alongside a captive-portal network, you could set the captive portal network to NOT connect automatically, preventing the client from flip-flopping between SSIDs. It's also real easy to use (from the admin point of view). If you are at all interested it is definitely worth getting in contact with them, they are very helpful and will provide a trial period for their product. So far we have found it works really well on Windows and Mac OS We have had a few issues with Ubuntu and Andriod, but that seems certificate based and their tech has been extremely helpful in helping resolve the problem. It seems we almost have it done. Apple IOS is really quite easy to config, so we aren't fully convinced on it's use for personal devices. However in a shared environment like what your talking about I can see how it could be very helpful with a bit of design and testing.
