We do not make a distinction between student-owned and staff-owned devices. We
make a distinction between AD joined (usually university owned) devices and
other, usually personally owned devices.
We currently have 3 main SSIDs.
There is a Guest [Liberty-Guest] SSID that is in a DMZ and has a policy
acceptance portal. It is bandwidth limited and primarily designed for Internet
access only.
We have a Secure WPA2-Enterprise-AES SSID [Liberty-Secure] that is the
preferred SSID for devices that support 802.1X (PEAP-MSCHAPv2) wireless access.
We have an Open SSID [Liberty-Wireless] that serves several purposes.
Users can use Cloudpath XpressConnect to provision their device for our
Secure SSID.
Using a web browser, a user can register the mac address of their
non-802.1X device, such as a game console. This web page can also be accessed
from our other SSIDs.
Registered devices can access internal & Internet resources, with a few
exceptions. We deny access to our main web page & Blackboard to encourage use
of our Secure network.
For our Open SSID we use a combination of DNS redirection and Aruba firewall
roles (ACLs) to restrict access by DNS & IP address.

Subject: Student devices
I was curious how you all handle student devices on your campus side. Do you
guys use a dedicated SSID? Is it open, encrypted, are you using 802.1x? Any
other details would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
