Any survey that’s just a few text fields is bound to only provide anecdotal
evidence. You cannot find a percent or average based on text fields which makes
them minimally useful.

It would be great to have a wireless report function in one of our campus info
apps to collect actual information about a users device and wireless
connection: Client MAC, AP MAC, RSSI, Client OS and maybe leave a short text
field or combo box list for describing the nature of the problem. I doubt it
would be very hard to even track the last five or ten APs for reporting
purposes. They could be sent in at a users choosing or as part of our Help Desk
working a tier one case. Allowing for one report every 10 or 15 minutes would
prevent spamming.

The difference between this and a survey is that this is all collected and sent
at the time the users experiencing a real or perceived problem. It would give
users a little more agency in their interaction with us. From my point of view
I think it would be fine to also allow a user the option to start a case in the
same report but our Help Desk would have the final word on that. I’m sure they
would have a strong opinion one way or the other. They’d probably opt not to
and just receive the reports along with our group.

Anyone working on something like this?

Right, also… GO NOLES AT THE ORANGE BOWL!

Subject: Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Periodic Wifi Performance Feedback

I would say contacting student bodies will be less effective than other
methods. We’ve tried the student government, RAs, and other organizations to
get feedback, and all we get is generalizations (“Wireless is bad in the
library”) or “campus legends” (“I know someone who knows someone who has
wireless problems in the library”). However, with students, you’ll probably get
skewed results from surveys as generally only the unhappy really spend the time
to fill them out. So you’ll get feedback on issues, but probably not an
overview of the experience. We encourage students to report wireless issues
(coverage, speed, etc) to the help desk, to have hard information throughout
the year and possibly explain anomalies (e.g. a failed AP in one area caused an
increase in wireless complaints in that area). Those can be tracked year to
year to see if they are going up, down, or are flat.

I think this is a tough issue to get real data on as students have widely
varying experiences and, more importantly, widely varying expectations.

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] Periodic Wifi Performance Feedback

Hi ,

I wanted to brainstorm on options through which we can have periodic feedbacks
from the students about their Wi-Fi experience all over the campus. Is anyone
using surveys, or contacting student bodies like the student council etc.? I
just wanted to have tangible numbers based on which we can judge the Wi-fi
performance that the students experience.

Thanks
Donald
