I would say contacting student bodies will be less effective than other
methods. We’ve tried the student government, RAs, and other organizations to
get feedback, and all we get is generalizations (“Wireless is bad in the
library”) or “campus legends” (“I know someone who knows someone who has
wireless problems in the library”). However, with students, you’ll probably get
skewed results from surveys as generally only the unhappy really spend the time
to fill them out. So you’ll get feedback on issues, but probably not an
overview of the experience. We encourage students to report wireless issues
(coverage, speed, etc) to the help desk, to have hard information throughout
the year and possibly explain anomalies (e.g. a failed AP in one area caused an
increase in wireless complaints in that area). Those can be tracked year to
year to see if they are going up, down, or are flat.

I think this is a tough issue to get real data on as students have widely
varying experiences and, more importantly, widely varying expectations.

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] Periodic Wifi Performance Feedback

Hi ,

I wanted to brainstorm on options through which we can have periodic feedbacks
from the students about their Wi-Fi experience all over the campus. Is anyone
using surveys, or contacting student bodies like the student council etc.? I
just wanted to have tangible numbers based on which we can judge the Wi-fi
performance that the students experience.

Thanks
Donald
