OK, so I realized that I hadn't mentioned in my previous that the iBook had a static IP address. In the interests of science I decided to try it with DHCP (from my 3COM ISDN modem/router) And naturally... which is to say, perversely... that cleared the web (NetFlix) symptom... although I still have to go hardwired to get email sent.
So, I'm still confused, but at a slightly higher level.
