802.11b is not full duplex meaning 5.5 mbps is the max transfer rate. 
Minus overhead, plus latency etc.

And unless your streaming 30 fps high res. video 5.5 mbps should be enough.

Things to look at though are your RSSI level.  The higher the number the
better ( -60 is better then -90).  To check that open the utility that
came with your pc card or RTFM.  Or look at how your receiving your
stream of video.  Test it on a 100 mb ethernet and see if you still get
choppy video.

802.11a might be overkill depending on your application.
