Correction: There are 3 defined media types for the original 802.11 spec:

802.11 DSSS (direct sequence - upwards compatable with 802.11b up to 2mb.)
802.11 FHSS (frequency hopping - not compatable with 802.11b.)
802.11 IR   (infared - not known to exist in the real world.)

So the answer is, it depends on what type of card it is. If you can find out
the make and model of the cards, some of us may remember what type they were.
