If your WEP key is > 40 bits (104, nee '128'), then I could understand 
it being a WEP issue.
It could also be encapsulation (802.1h .vs rfc1042), or, in some cases, 
I've seen vendors (Aironet)
encode 'extentions' that prevent some cards (such as the Intalk/Nokia) 
cards from sending data,
even though the STA is associated.

I don't know anything about the SMC AP though
