The chipsets used in these devices are extremely dense and difficult if not
impossible to solder, plus it would be hard to get all the proper shielding,
etc without having a custom PCB made...

You're better off checking EBay or looking for a small PC card or USB
adaptor on sale at Fry's, etc.

Hint: Check Best Buy - Lots of people buy wireless gear there, take it home,
give up trying to figure it out, and then return it in working condition,
but Best Buy cuts the price just because it was returned -- a much better
deal than how Fry's deals with returns!

Subject: [BAWUG] build-it-yourself

Is it possible to buy off the shelf parts (radio shack, frys, internet,
etc) and build a (very) low-end 802.11 transmitter? I'd like to use a pc
and a transmitter to do some testing of wi-fi apps which i'm thinking of
writing. I know i could just get a linksys product, but i want to do
something a little cheaper, and perhaps eventually combine into a smaller
form factor.

Have any good guides been written on this? Or are there small form factor
devices (with built in web servers?) already out there.....

thanks from a (relatively new) newbie. ;-)
