These meetings cost $10 and refreshments are provided. I have attended about 6-8 of them over the years and they are well done. They are sponsored by WCA, the Wireless Communications Association, http://www.wca.org. --jack
WCA Meeting this month is Thursday , October 17, 2002 Date: Thursday , October 17, 2002 Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Location: Hewlett-Packard in CUPERTINO 19091 Pruneridge Ave., Cupertino, CA Building 48S, Oak Room Auditorium 1) Mobile and Wireless Trends - Tim Wouda, founder and principal consultant of Wireless Networks, Netherlands Mr. Wouda will present the results of the study which analyses visions of experts in the wireless industry to address the concerns of next generation mobile networks and examines potential disruptive wireless technologies. "The telecommunications market has passed turbulent years. 3G has lost a big part of its glamour and many carriers consider delays or even cancel rollout. In the meantime, Wireless LAN experienced a strong growth. Moreover, potential disruptive developments are on their way like Community Networks, Mesh Networks, Ultra Wide Band and Ad-hoc networks. This study aims to Define a wireless technology roadmap in which the planned and the unplanned pieces of the puzzle find their place," explains Tim Wouda. Tim Wouda holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering and a MSc in Telecommunications & Innovations Policy. His masters dissertation has been rewarded with the prestigious NGI Information Technology Research Paper Award. Wireless Networks is a systems integrator and analyst, specialized in]broadband wireless data communications networks. Last Mile Wireless Broadband Access, Victor Shtrom, Wireless Consultant 2) Dr. Victor Shtrom will discuss the deployment issues and potential solutions in the broadband wireless last mile access space. Dr. Shtrom has been involved in the design and deployment of 'smart' antenna technologies for wireless cellular voice and data systems for nearly a decade. Previously, he was the Senior Technical Marketing Manager at Iospan Wireless. In that role he contributed to the IEEE 802.16 standards as well as performing cost/benefit trade-offs for existing and emerging technologies. Shtrom has also held positions with ARGO Systems/Boeing. Shtrom holds a Ph.D. In communication theory and has authored papers in the areas of blind equalization and smart antenna processing. This month we are holding our meeting at HP, Cupertino. Please pass this notice on to your associates. We may from time to time change dates and locations, so please check our web site for latest updates, http://www.wca.org. Recently there has been a lot of activity surrounding broadband, high speed internet access. There were numerous Wireless Broadband related sessions at the Communications Design Conference, a Hot Spot Conference, and a Broadband Opportunities for Semiconductor Entrepreneur's session sponsored by the MIT Club of Northern America. And there have been editorial opinions in the San Jose Mercury about the lack of broadband access in the Silicon Valley, more recently by Jim Cunneen, President and CEO of San Jose Chamber of Commerce, and Miguel Helft, a Mercury News editorial writer. This month we have the distinction of getting a overview of the Mobile and wireless industry, as well as a focused look at last mile wireless Broadband Access. Perhaps therein somewhere lies the solution for the Silicon Valley?
