Duhhh... Problem is I don't know the basics. If there
is a FAQ please direct me there. Meanwhile:

There are Prism 2 cards, but what other kind(s) are
there and what are the differences?

Some cards apparently begin transmitting when the
computer is fired up, others apparently do not? ie if
I get near an AP with some cards, I will detect the AP
and it will detect me, but with others I see their
signal but they don't see me unless I try to connect
to their SSID?
Some cards listen anonymously, some do not?

I have a Seimens AP DSL router and two Pentiums; one
with Linksys Instant Wireless PCMCIA ver 3 & Win 2000,
the other with Instant Wireless USB Network Adapter
WUSB11 ver2.6 on a Pent I notebook with Win 98.

Boingo utility picks up my AP. (I am not in range of
any Boingo sites).

Aerosol doesn't like the PC card. (... does not appear
to be Prism 2 [invalid channel]) but the USB card
does; gets the right SSID which is 'aarrgghh'

On the Win 2000 box, NetStumbler, Ethereal and
Packetyzer don't pick up anything; no signal, no SSID,
nothing. Packetyzer shows zero signal strength and
zero noise level.

FWIW, the AP is on DSL modem and hardwired to two
boxes. One isn't being used (Linux) the other (with
the PCMCIA card) is online (downloading old radio
shows) so there is DSL activity. The AP wireless
settings are SSID 'aarrgghh'. Ch 6, No WEP and allow
all wireless stations. (There is nothing on this
computer that is important; used for learning only)and
the AP is near the intersection of Post and Larkin.

Networking (hardwired) is set up on these two
computers (Win 2000 and Linux) through the router. The
notebook with the USB wireless card is not networked.

I assumed that as set up, the AP would be broadcasting
what goes through the router - the FTP connection but
the wireless LED is steady green; blinks once in a
great while.

I also assumed that while some of these programs are
'sniffers' to intercept packets, at least they would
pick up the AP SSID.

Would be interesting if someone were driving around
this area to see if they pick up the AP.

Can anyone help me get started in the right direction,
please.

Thanx,

m shannon
