Wow! I got 4 responses right away. JC Dill was first, so he gets it-- look for a new node in Los Altos.
One thing I might not have emphasized in my previous note was that I had a cable made by Allcom Products (allcompc.com) to connect the antenna to a Linksys WAP11. It's a 400M-SM-TL-48, which means 48 inches of LMR-400 cable (very low loss, very thick) terminated by a female SMA (for the antenna) on one end and an RP-TNC (for the WAP-11) on the other. So.. two things: 1) If you don't have a 802.11b device with a male RP-TNC, you'll need a new cable. It's a significant expense: $30 for the antenna and another $20 for the cable (i.e. 40%). You can use cheaper coax, particularly if you have a short run (LMR-400 might be overkill for four feet) and you can try building it yourself, but the proper crimping tools are wildly expensive. Maybe you can jury-rig a crimp, but microwaves are wily little beasts. 2) Allcom rocks! They'll build you any cable for a really reasonable price: 1/2 of other quotes I got. You pay an inflated amount for the first foot to cover the assembly costs, then a normal price for additional feet: $9.91 + $0.86 * (n-1) for LMR-400. It takes a little while, but I think it was under two weeks from order to receipt. http://music.lockup.org -- general wireless list, a bawug thing <http://www.bawug.org/> [un]subscribe: http://lists.bawug.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless
