Yep, I could see how this is a Centrino marketing exercise but
the line quoted below struck a dissonant, strident note to me.

    hobbyists and put it on a paying basis.

On the other hand, the previous poster's comment about this effort
being doomed because its like trying to sell 'bottled air' is clearly
false: how about, it's like trying to sell bottled water? People are
willing to pay for (perceived or real) quality and reliability even
though there are free alternatives. Sure I can open your side gate,
walk through your back yard and drink from your garden hose (the
free CWN model), but I'd rather buy a litre of Calistoga at 7-11.
